Petition Defense

Petition defense when your place on the ballot is challenged

Research. Rehabilitate. Stay on.

Qualifying is not always the end of the fight. When a petition is challenged, proponents need fast, accurate research that answers each objection. VFO provides it, working alongside your legal counsel.

Petition Defense

Staying on the ballot is its own campaign.

Objections can question individual signatures, whole sheets or the petition as a whole, often with very little time to respond. A strong defense depends on two things: the quality of the original collection records and the speed and accuracy of the response research.

VFO builds petitions with defense in mind — documented custody, circulator records and validation — and supports proponents with organized research when a challenge arrives, including petitions VFO did not collect.

What VFO does

What VFO manages, performs and documents.

  • Objection review

Organizing and analyzing each objection so counsel can see exactly what is being questioned.

  • Signature rehabilitation research

Lawful research supporting questioned signatures, such as confirming registration or address information.

  • Record assembly

Custody records, circulator records and validation work assembled into usable exhibits.

  • Field research

Trained field teams for lawful, factual follow-up when counsel directs it.

  • Rapid response teams

Reviewers and researchers mobilized quickly to meet response deadlines.

  • Coordination with counsel

Findings delivered in the format and on the schedule counsel needs.

Answer every objection with evidence

From objection to documented response.

A defense is a race against the response deadline. VFO organizes the objections, researches each one through lawful processes and documents the answer for counsel.

Know the difference

Defense starts with how the petition was built.

The best defense is a well-documented petition. That is why VFO’s collection, circulator and validation work keeps records from day one. Parties evaluating a challenge to someone else’s petition should see petition challenges.

Questions

Petition Defense: common questions.

What is petition defense?

Petition defense is the proponent’s effort to keep a qualified petition on the ballot when its sufficiency is challenged — reviewing the objections, researching questioned signatures and documenting why they should count, led by the proponent’s legal counsel.

Can VFO help defend a petition it did not collect?

Yes. VFO can review objections and research questioned signatures for petitions collected by volunteers or another vendor, subject to access to the petitions and lawfully available data.

What makes a petition easier to defend?

Thorough records: circulator records, documented chain of custody and validation performed before filing. These let counsel respond to objections quickly and accurately.

How fast can a defense review start?

Response windows are often short, so VFO maintains the staffing and management infrastructure to start quickly. Contact VFO as soon as a challenge is filed, or expected, so scope can be set with counsel.

Does it help if VFO collected the petition?

It helps when strong records exist, whoever collected the petition. VFO-collected petitions come with circulator, custody and validation records from day one, which makes research faster.

Start the scoping conversation

What we need to scope it.

Share what you have. Partial answers are fine. A VFO leader will respond with what’s realistic and what it will take.

  • The challenge filing and objections received
  • The response deadline and hearing schedule, if set
  • Counsel’s contact and priorities
  • Available collection records (custody, circulator and validation), whoever collected the petition
  • Access to lawfully available voter data
